Everybody is comparing hardware specs and camera quality. The race, it seems, is always about who can beat out their competition with just marginally better camera quality, or marginally better screen density, or marginally better battery life, and etc. But, no one ever talks about the phones operating system and the people involved in building it.
Google phones use the Android operating system at their core. An open-source operating system that everyone can install and use for free. Yes, Google actually gives away their operating system to whoever wants it. You can go ahead and download the whole source code and built your own phone if you like, here is the link: https://source.android.com/
What does this mean?
Well, it means that the whole open-source world and all the programmers can see and use all this awesome code that Google is developing. It means that any programmer can see the internal workings of the Android operating system, nothing is hidden from the public.
Phone manufacturers can use this operating system freely and make modifications to it as well if needed, and all of this happens in plain view.
Why is open-source important?
Open source projects, such as the Android project, allows developers to re-use and improve on the code. Phone manufacturers such as Samsung, OnePlus, Motorola, and many others are allowed to provide their customers with one of the best operating systems ever made, because its open-source and free for everyone to use. Unlike the locked down and proprietary operating system provided by Apple, any manufacturer can freely install Android on their phones.
Anyone manufacturer who uses Android and makes modifications to it, must provide all the updated code for everyone to see.
- Here is One-Plus’s updates to Android for example: https://github.com/OnePlusOSS.
- Samsung’s updates can be found here: https://opensource.samsung.com/main
- And here is Motorola’s updates: https://github.com/MotorolaMobilityLLC
How does this benefit me?
Google’s Android project forces everyone to work together to achieve a common goal. To build a more secure and feature-full operating system that anyone can benefit from.
Why buy a Google Pixel phone?
First of all, Google Pixel phones are some of the best phones money can buy. They are up their along with other top-tier phones, and often beat out the competition in one or more ways.
But apart from being a really good phone, buying a Pixel phone means you are directly contributing to the development of an awesome Android operating system and helping the open-source community.
What Google Pixel phone do I currently recommend?
I highly recommend the latest Google Pixel 8 Pro. It has recently had a price drop which makes it one of the best bang-for-your-buck phones available:
